Talk Therapy

Narrative = Story

Life stories can either limit people’s potential or enhance that potential. Limited stories can often cause pain and self-destructiveness. By affecting change in the language of one’s self-narrative, the meaning can also change - creating opportunities for new behaviors, relationships, and self-beliefs.

Narrative Therapy was developed under social constructionist theory, proposed by Michael White and David Epston. Social constructs are concepts made by a group of people in society, often times the dominant culture - who provide the “story” or narrative for all people in that society, leaving out perspectives of individuals and minority groups.
